LESSON plan

1. Kite Control.

Your first step is understanding how to control your kite in the wind and where the power zone of a kite is. A trainer kite is recommended for this step, they are usually 2 square meters. Check out the trainer kite you can buy at Playa Central Kiteshop.

2. Safety and ground skills.

Your Instructor explains safety proceedures (use of emergency quick release, how to do self rescue, launch and land your kite with an assistant), kite set-up tips, etc.

3. Body Drag with instructor

With the kite at the edge of the wind window, you will walk into the water with an instructor and do your first downwind body drag. Your instructor will show you how to dip your kite to get power, explain how to relaunch a kite from the water. You will learn how to position your body in order to bodydrag upwind and practicing how to recover your board.

4. solo body drag

Once you feel confident about your kite control in the water, you will do downwind body drags with your Radio Helmet. We will follow you down the beach while giving you calm instruction and correcting your mistakes.

5. board time

Final step to becoming a kite BOARDER! During this step you can learn how to ride both ways, ride upwind, and turn. Getting up on the board is about a few things:

  • When you are waterstarting, make sure you dip the kite with enough power to get you weight up out of the water, but be sure not to over dip it so it doesn't pull you foward into the water.
  • Once you find that inbetween kitestroke that gets you up on the board, it is your job to try to keep good posture and keep the kite powered.

All teaching gear is of the highest standards. We provide our clients with harness, life jackets, kites and boards. For a perfect fit, we recommend you bring your own wetsuit. You are welcome to learn on your own gear. We offer lessons in English, Spanish and French.

learn at playa central

Commonly known, La Ventana is one of the safest, beginner-friendly, and scenic places to learn to kite board. Kite magazines and websites recommend it because of:

  • Sandy wide beaches, ideal for launching, landing, and landskills.
  • L shaped bay with no current, creating a catcher's mit for downwinder kiters.
  • Daily thermal wind and frequent Nortes (North fronts).
  • Professional kiteschools.
  • Overall good selection on accomodations and other activities.
  • Yummy and well priced restaurants; fish tacos, shrimp pizza, fresh pasta, tamales, calamari.
